What if you want connection but expect rejection?

You may rehearse a message and never send it, turn down work you could do, or leave a gathering early before anyone has the chance to judge you. Relief comes first. Later there is loneliness and another reason to believe you do not belong.

This is more than being quiet. The person often wants closeness intensely but experiences ordinary uncertainty as evidence that exposure will end in humiliation.

How is avoidant personality disorder distinguished from social anxiety?

Assessment looks at the breadth and duration of avoidance, self-concept, attachment, relationships, mood and the situations that trigger shame. Social anxiety may be more situation-specific, while avoidant personality patterns often shape identity and closeness across much of life.

The distinction is not made from one symptom. Depression, trauma, autism and cultural context also need consideration.

How does therapy address avoidance without overwhelming you?

Schema therapy examines entrenched expectations of defectiveness and rejection. CBT uses graded behavioural experiments to test predictions in manageable steps, while compassion-focused work reduces the punitive inner response that follows imperfect social moments.

The pace matters. Therapy should challenge avoidance without repeating the experience of being pushed, exposed or judged.

What can change look like in daily life?

Progress may begin with staying in a conversation, expressing one preference or accepting an invitation despite uncertainty. Over time, the goal is not to become highly social, but to make choices from preference rather than anticipated rejection.

Online sessions are available in English or Arabic, subject to the professional and legal requirements that apply where you live.

Online therapy is planned care, not emergency support. Current risk, stability and access to local support are considered during assessment.
