Do I have to talk about the abuse in therapy?

The short answer is no. Good trauma therapy does not begin with the worst memory. It begins with safety, with your present life and with tools that help you stay steady.

Why detailed telling too early can harm

Approaching traumatic memory before the nervous system has enough stability can overwhelm a person and strengthen the avoidance therapy is meant to reduce. That is why pacing is a clinical principle, not a courtesy.

What the first sessions focus on

  • How you are sleeping, working and relating now
  • What triggers you and how your body responds
  • Your window of tolerance and how to widen it
  • A plan for difficult moments between sessions

You stay in control

You decide what is said and when. You can pause any exercise. Some people never describe events fully and still recover deeply, because the work targets shame, meaning and the body, not the retelling itself.

Ready to start your therapy journey?

If any of this described your own experience closely, that is usually a sign it is worth speaking to someone. The first session is unhurried, entirely confidential, and there is no obligation to continue beyond it.
